The Model T's are coming
Today's issue is packed with a ton of upcoming events, including the Texas T Party, a gathering of Model T cars from throughout the state.
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2021
At least 84 Ford Model T’s and 160 members of the Texas T Car Club will be in and around Temple next week, and they will participate in local activities such as First Friday.
Ford Model T’s are shown at the 2019 Texas T Party in Brenham, the last year the event was held. The event was scheduled for Temple in 2020 but was canceled because of COVID-19 concerns. This year, the Model T club will be in Temple for five days starting Sept. 29.
T Party coming to Temple next week
By DAVID STONE, Our Temple exclusive
There’s going to be a T Party in Temple, and it has nothing to do with politics or caffeinated beverages.
At least 84 Ford Model T’s and 160 members of the Texas T Car Club will be in and around Temple next week, and they will participate in several local activities.
“We will start arriving in Temple early Wednesday, Sept. 29,” said Hugh Hemphill, a spokesman for Texas T. “
Club members will be staying at Hilton Garden Inn, a popular Temple hotel that has been closed since February because of winter-storm freeze damage. Hemphill said he has been assured the hotel will open prior to Sept. 29.
After a morning of meetings and registration, the group’s activities will start at 3 p.m.
“We will leave the hotel and drive downtown, then tour the Temple Historic District,” Hemphill said. “We’re looking forward to seeing the historic homes. Temple has some beautiful old homes, and we’ll take time to photograph our cars in front of the houses.”
The Ford enthusiasts will head to Waco on Sept. 30 to tour Heritage Farms and the Magnolia Silos, then stop at 3 Texan Winery west of Temple before returning to the hotel.
“Friday (October 1) will be a big day for us,” Hemphill said. “We’re going to head to Salado to shop in the morning, then come back for Temple’s big First Friday event.”
October’s First Friday will adopt an Oktoberfest theme, and there will be half a dozen block parties downtown.
On Saturday, October 2, Texas T Party events include a visit to the Early Day Tractor & Engine Show in Temple, lunch in Ratibor and a visit to the Temple Railroad & Heritage Museum.
The visit to the railroad museum will be in conjunction with Transportation Family Day, which will focus on the Ford Model T. The event begins at 10 a.m. and concludes at 1 p.m.
“Be sure and check out the Texas T Party car show and learn about these cool vehicles,” said Catherine Dodd, a Temple Railroad & Heritage Museum spokesperson. “There will be about 12 Model T’s in front of the museum.”
Hemphill said the car owners who are participating in the museum event will be letting the public sit in the cars and take family photos.
The Model T, also known as the Tin Lizzie, was built by Ford from 1908 to 1927 and was known as America’s first affordable car. It’s low price was the result of Ford’s assembly line production methods. More than 15 million Model T’s were sold and opened the highways to middle-class Americans.
WORK CONTINUES ON SIDEWALK PROJECT
The Adams and Central Avenue bicycle and pedestrian improvements project will improve sidewalk connectivity through downtown Temple, according to city spokesperson Cody Weems. Sidewalks constructed in this project will comply with American Disabilities Act standards in an effort to enhance mobility for people of all abilities. The Central Avenue sidewalks — shown above — are nearing completion. Once finished, the focus will move to Adams Avenue. The project is scheduled for completion in November.
