Here comes the King

The Budweiser Clydesdales, accompanied by delivery dog Clyde, made old-style deliveries to Downtown watering holes and delighted throngs of residents en route.

The Clydesdales make a stop on 2nd Street during Friday’s Budweiser Parade so the wagon team could deliver a case of beer to bars and restaurants in that area. The team started at the Municipal Building parking lot and headed east on Central, turned right on 2nd, right on B and right on 1st before heading back to the parking lot. The horse-drawn wagon made many stops along the way for photo opportunities and beer deliveries. David Stone photo

The Clydesdales were well taken care of every step of the way. A handler is shown wiping excess saliva from one of the lead horses during a delivery stop along the Downtown route. The horses were no doubt debating whether they should kick or go for two after their next touchdown. (For you young folks, that’s a nod to a very popular Budweiser commercial from a long time ago). Clyde, a Budweiser Dalmatian, watches the crowd from atop the beer wagon during a stop on 2nd Street. The wagon master directs a delivery to Pignetti’s Italian Restaurant during the stop. David Stone photo

A case of Bud is readied for delivery to The Green Door. The 2nd Street stop was one of the longest breaks because of the high number of drinking establishments on the block. David Stone photo

A Jack Hilliard Distributing Co. “delivery man” hands a case of Bud to Dan Elder, co-owner of Corky’s Beer & Wine. Jack Hilliard, a beer distributor in Temple, was instrumental in bringing the Clydesdale team to the area. The team also made stops in Killeen and at Fort Hood. David Stone photo

Budweiser sold literally hundreds of stuffed Clydesdales to Temple kids — yeah, kids…we’ll go with that — during the parade. I couldn’t resist using a beer and a stuffed horse sitting on a nearby table as props for a photo. Guess what the horse’s name is? Bud! David Stone photo

The wagon heads past the Federal Building en route to La Dalat and J Kowboy Wine Bar. Some Budweiser faithful followed the wagon the entire route. David Stone photo

Traffic from Wendland Road to McLane Parkway will be shifted to two-way on the newly constructed south lanes of the Outer Loop starting April 21.

The project is expected to last about five months.

Two lanes of traffic will be available for motorists: one for eastbound traffic and one for westbound traffic.

Additionally, the intersection of Cedar Creek Road and Old Howard Road will close April 21 and is expected to reopen in about a month.

Detours will be implemented, and access to residential areas and businesses will be maintained.

These traffic impacts are related to Phase II of the Outer Loop North Project.

On this day in 1947, the ship SS Grandcamp exploded at the docks in Texas City. The French-owned vessel, carrying ammonium nitrate produced during wartime for explosives and later recycled as fertilizer, caught fire early in the morning. While attempts were being made to extinguish the fire, the ship exploded. The entire dock area was destroyed, along with the nearby Monsanto Chemical Company, other smaller companies, grain warehouses, and numerous oil and chemical storage tanks. The concussion of the explosion, felt as far away as Port Arthur, damaged or destroyed at least 1,000 residences and buildings. The ship SS High Flyer, in dock for repairs and also carrying ammonium nitrate, was ignited by the first explosion; it was towed 100 feet from the docks before it exploded the next day. The ship's anchor monument records 576 persons known dead, only 398 of whom were identified. Probably the exact number of people killed will never be known.

On this day in 1971, Tejana superstar Selena Quintanilla Perez was born in Lake Jackson. She won the first of eight Tejano Music Awards as female entertainer of the year in 1987. Her 1992 album Entre a Mi Mundo made her the first Tejana to sell more than 300,000 albums, and her bilingual 1995 album Dreaming of You hit number one on the national Billboard Top 100 the week it was released. On March 31 of that year in Corpus Christi, Selena was fatally shot by the founder of her first fan club. More than 30,000 people viewed her casket at the Bayfront Plaza Convention Center in Corpus Christi. A biographical film of her life was released in 1997.
